Award for Living Heritage - City of Vancouver Heritage Awards 2023!

Woohoo, we won something!

We at KJD are honoured to have received an Award for Living Heritage at last night’s City of Vancouver Heritage Awards for Coming Out of Chaos: A Vancouver Dance Story!

Coming Out of Chaos: A Vancouver Dance Story is an oral history and archival research project that documents a specific moment in Vancouver contemporary dance history and its many interconnecting threads through time. The aim of this project is to preserve and bring awareness to Vancouver’s rich dance history using valuable primary source materials – archives and oral history interviews – to tell a story from various perspectives.

The team at KJD who worked on this project included Creative Director Emma Metcalfe Hurst, co-writer/co-researcher and KJD Archivist Charlotte Leonard, Archives Manager Clare Asquith Finegan, Managing Director Pamela Tagle, and Artistic Director Karen Jamieson.

Thank you to Barbara Bourget, Jennifer Mascall, Peter Bingham, Lola Ryan, Savannah Walling, Susan Berganzi, Barbara Clausen, Linda Rubin, Jay Hirabayashi, Terry Hunter, Max Wyman, Kaija Pepper, Peter Dickinson, Amber Funk Barton, Josh Martin, and Darcy McMurray, as well as Peggy Baker, Debashis Sinha, Chris Randle, Michael Goldberg,  Rod Roodenberg and Richard White of Roodenburg Design, Brandon Wolfe Scott, City of Vancouver Archives, Simon Fraser University Archives, Western Front Archives, VIVO Media Arts Centre / Video Out Distribution, and UBC Arts Co-op Office for your support in realizing this project.

The creation of Coming Out of Chaos: A Vancouver Dance Story would not have been possible without operational funding from Canada Council for the Arts, BC Arts Council, and City of Vancouver.

Special thanks to KJD Board Member Steve Bridger for coming out to support the team, and to everyone involved in the City of Vancouver Heritage Awards.

Check out the other winners here.

The awards ceremony took place May 15th at the historic Hollywood Theatre in Kitsilano and was hosted by the wonderful Fred Lee and City Councillor Adriane Carr. We had a fabulous time!
